Djokovic Thrills
Novak Djovakic, the Serbian Tennis player, is the new darling of Wimbledon’s Centre Court.
His 3 sets to 1 defeat of Rafa Nadal yesterday confirmed his status as the coming man in his sport. To beat Nadal, and pick up his third Grand Slam title in such style suggests that all future tournaments look like being Djokovic versus the rest. Roger Federer’s perfromances are on the decline, Rafa Nadal has been beaten comprehensively, and Andy Murray hopes of ever becoming a Major Champion look increasingly fragile. Djokovic could reign for some time unless Nadal can find some answers to the Serbian’s irresistible play.
I am a massive fan of Roger Federer for so many different reasons, not least his elegant style of play. I also have become a big fan of Rafa Nadal, who also seems a high quality individual. I have loved watching these two giants of their sport slug it out over the past twenty or so ‘Slams’ to determine the Champion on a variety of surfaces around the globe. However, I found myself being drawn to the intensity and quality of the Serbian yesterday. He looks an amazing performer.
It is often said about ‘contenders’, that if you want to make an assessment of their possibilities of success, take a deep look into their eyes. Djokovic’s eyes appear to burn with an intensity and a passion for success. Some may feel that his style and personality are subject to possible burn-out, but in the meantime, he suggests that he could ‘tear up’ the Men’s ATP Tour for a good while yet.
He seems a delightful and humble young man. He has made some significant sacrifices to achieve his dream of winning Wimbledon, and made stacks of new friends along the way this past fortnight. It has been a brilliant Wimbledon fortnight for all neutrals, and despite it being over for us all, it isn’t over for him. Instead, I suspect it represents a new beginning. Djokovic must be so thrilled to have woken up today as the new Champio, safe in the knowledge that all the earlier sacrifices are beginning to pay off.
Who knows when the British wait for the first Wimbledon Men’s Singles Winner since Fred Perry will end? 75 years and counting…..
